Piedmont is getting greener Several projects to support sustainable mobility

The Piedmont Region is investing in a "greener and more sustainable" mobility future. In April 2022 the Plan on the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) 2021-2027 was officially submitted to the European Commission. The latter will have 5 months to approve it, and in January 2023 the Region's first calls for proposals can start.

In the coming years, thanks to the allocation of these funds, Piedmont will consolidate the path already started long ago for the development of an integrated and sustainable mobility system, able to offer Piedmontese people a wide choice of mobility services with which to move around the territory, in a conscious, safe and more environmentally friendly way.

On the one hand, interventions and projects will focus on improving local public transport services: an extensive and widespread network that will be increasingly accessible, efficient, digital, and green.

On the other hand, Piedmont is investing in regional cycling with initiatives to encourage the use of bicycles not only for tourism and recreation but also for all other, more everyday mobility needs. The aim is to culturally promote a new way of moving, including on home-work-school routes.

The ERDF allocation is nearly 1.5 billion euros, which Piedmont can count on until 2027. The aim is to work in the direction of a region that is more competitive, more sustainable and closer to its citizens.

What are the priorities of the Piedmont ERDF?

There are five priorities on which Piedmont's ERDF programming focuses:

  1. Competitiveness and digital transition (research and innovation, digitalization, sustainable growth of SMEs)
  2. Ecological transition and resilience (energy efficiency, renewable energy, risk prevention, innovative recycling systems, biodiversity protection)
  3. Sustainable urban mobility to promote cycling
  4. Infrastructure for skills development
  5. Cohesion and territorial development (promoting integrated and inclusive social, economic and environmental development, culture, natural heritage, sustainable tourism and security).

In addition, through participation in European projects and calls for support aimed at businesses, the region is also supporting the energy transition of private and commercial vehicles by focusing on increasing electric mobility with the aim of reducing pollutant emissions and improving air quality in Piedmont.
